UNIVERSITY of WISCONSIN-MADISON

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I make a profile?

If you don't have a profile already, you should have the option to "Create a Profile" in the menu at the top of the screen. Once you've clicked that option, you can enter your profile information. Just click Edit on the fields you'd like to add information to. Once you've entered everything you'd like included in your profile, click the "Submit For Review" button.

How do I edit my profile?

If you already have a profile or have one saved in progress, you should have the option to go to "My Profile" in the menu at the top of the screen. Once you've clicked that option, you can edit the information in your profile. If it is already published, you'll have to click "Move To Draft" first. Once you've made the edits, click "Submit For Review" to (re)publish the profile.

What do I have to include in profile for it to be published?

Name, Department/Unit, Role, Email, Expertise, and an entry in the "I will support students by..." field. We encourage you to have a profile picture and enter information into the other fields as well, but this list is the minimum requirement.

How do I make it easy for students to find my profile if we are a good fit?

Use the Expertise field! This is what the search feature looks at if students enter search terms when looking for an advisor.

Why wasn't my profile published immediately?

All profiles are reviewed by SOLI staff to be published. This review will happen 3-4 times a week. If there is an issue with your profile (e.g., missing or unclear information), SOLI staff will contact you by email to let you know of any necessary revisions.

How should my student organization reach out to a potential advisor?

Send them an email! It can be as simple as describing your organziation and noting that you saw their profile on AdvisorPool and think they'd be a good match. If you want more information an an outreach template, checkout SOLI's advisor search process resources.

A student organization asked me to be their advisor, and I agreed! What happens next?

The organization will submit your name and email to a form during registration. This will generate a confirmation email for you and a few next steps to complete after you confirm that you will advisor that student organization.

Can students post profiles?

Undergraduates cannot, but graduate students can. Graduate students are allowed to advisor undergraduate student organizations.

If undergraduate students aren't allowed to post profiles, why do I see the Create a Profile option?

There are some circumstances where undergraduates will see the Create a Profile option. However, SOLI staff will not publish an undergraduate profile.

If graduate students are allowed to post profiles, why don't I see the Create a Profile option?

There are some circumstances where graduate students won't automatically have the Create a Profile option. If that is your experience, please email rso_advisor_outreach@union.wisc.edu to be given access to the Create a Profile option.

I know someone without a netID who wants to be an advisor. Can they publish a profile?

Not at this time. SOLI is evaluating the need for this option. If someone does not have a netID and wants to be able to make a profile, they should email rso_advisor_outreach@union.wisc.edu, and SOLI staff will let them know if posting becomes an option in the future.

I don't want my profile published anymore. What should I do?

Click "My Profile" and then the Delete button. If you aren't sure, you can also email soli@union.wisc.edu to ask that the profile be deleted.

I received a rude communication from a student organization (or anyone) in response to my profile. What should I do?

Forward that communication to soli@union.wisc.edu right away! We will respond and can ban users from AdvisorPool if needed.
